- Great investment I am 63 years old and last year I was tapped on my shoulder and reminded I was mortal. I decided to start taking care of myself. When I was younger I worked out with weights, but gave that up and gave them away many years ago. I recently purchased some dumbells and did the normal exercises, but it became boring. I knew what ever I did I would have to do for the rest of my life. I started looking at rowing machines. I have learned that you generally get what you pay for. I did not want to get one where mechanical problems got in the way of exercise. Looked at the lower cost machines (I can be cheap), then looked a the Concept 2. I probably would have gotten the Concept 2 except for the length, I settled for the Kettler.
True to the other reviews the Kettler arrived in 5 days and was missing parts in my case the footrests. Kettler USA without any questions sent them with 3 day shipping. It does take 1 1/2 hours to put together, mainly by following pictures, it is not rocket science. The piston adjustment numbers are alittle off, that is not a problem you adjust them so they are equal. The "computer" is in German, that is not a problem unless you believe the world should be in English and you can not remember what 5 digital readouts mean. There are only two things I do not like about the Kettler 1) It assumes you know how to use the rowing machine, it comes with no instructions on rowing form, this is solved by going on the internet and watching some videos on YouTube; second the ear pulse heart monitor with its wire drives me craze, I purchased a Omron HR 100c heart rate monitor from Amazon for about $35 it comes with a handle bar mount that works great. If you are my age I suggest you use a heart rate monitor, it will keep you from over doing it on the machine. You do not want people to say "he died while rowing in his backyard".
What I like about the Kettler 1) it is a solid machine and probably will not wear out so I will not get a chance buy a Concept 2; 2) its fluid rowing motion is low impact on joints something we old folks need; 3) it is relaxing and fun way to excerise; 3) my blood pressure is dropping as is my glucose level and I feel better. I am happy I made the investment.
One last note that maybe helpful to those that have footrest/tiedown problems. I strapped a pair of loose fitting Crocs permanently on foot rests so I would not have to deal with the velcro straps every time I get on the machine. All I need to do now is slip my feet into the Crocs and off I go.
August 11 - Had a part that failed, that can only be blamed on poor quality controls at Kettler. If it was not for the superior customer service in thier parts department this product would loose some shine. The parts department again without question shipped me a replacement part which I received within 7 days. I still consider it a good investment.
- Upgraded to 4 stars (Not as pictured!) I am changing my rating to a 4 star. I was using the wrong rowing technique. One has to use the Sculling Technique (I have only rowed in rowboats to fish). I wish the user guide would have technique instructions for this device. I searched the WEB for 'proper rowing technique' and found a great video explaining the sculling technique. Great workout! Kettler needs to improve the foot rest straps and the manual then it would be 5 stars. Amazon needs to put the proper picture on the product page and so does Kettler in its brochure! There was a design change to where the rowing bars attach to the shock absorbers to make it more robust.
- Just a piece of (German) junk... I would have expected more from a German company...
After less than 3 months of using (almost) daily, 45 minutes a day, the right piston is damaged; after 15 minutes of training it doesn't hold the pressure anymore. Of course if gets hot but that is a known problem of the design...
This toy might work if you bought it just because you feel guilty for a few pounds extra and believe that by buying it, 90% of the job is done and you can slim down just by looking at it... If you really intend to use it, this is just a piece of (German) junk.
I preferred it to the cheap copy because I respected Kettler brand and I thought I would be fair to them since they designed it... Well - poor choice.
- Excellent Rowing Machine! I owned a clanky, squeaky rowing machine (pre-owned - cheap!) back in the early '90s, and it worked well... so well in fact, after several months I bent and tore off one rowing arm during a workout.
Now I'm over 60 and feel the need to 'get back' before it's 'too late'.
This rowing machine is sooooo much nicer (should be, given the $600+ price!). I've only used it for several days, now, and love it. I can feel the difference from head to foot already. Why did I wait so long?!
I actually enjoyed putting it together (about an hour)... the drawing instructions work fine...comes with all the tools you need (you will need a phillips head screwdriver one time)... and the parts fit together precisely... no missing parts: WHICH IS A MIRACLE CONSIDERING THE UNIT ARRIVED IN A CARDBOARD BOX PACKAGE THAT WAS COMING APART. Yes, alas, the packaging was way under par. I was very lucky... as one bolt had fallen off a part and was rattling around... and should have fallen out of the open seams of the box. That is the only reason I took off one star.
It comes with a digital readout, thermometer, pulse meter, etc., but I only use the timer.
HOWEVER, now that it's put together, working, fee is paid - forgotten and in hindsight, I'm more than pleased with this exercise machine. I can tell it will last a long time, and have heard that replacement parts are fairly easy to come by thru Kettler.
It is smooth, quiet, heavy-duty, and most importantly effective: I enjoy the workout.
Recommended.

- Happily Rowing on My Kettler Kadett Outrigger Rower I was on low work leave for several weeks and wanted to keep in shape for my physical job. I had been on a real rowboat as a kid once in my life, and wasn't totally thrilled with the experience. Yet, I kept having the thought for a few years now that I should get a rower. I finally acted on that hunch and couldn't be happier.
I searched a bit online, and when I saw one that was German-made and actually simulated a real rowing experience, I knew exactly what type I had to get.
Like other reviews mentioned, when you're using it, it doesn't feel like you're really having a really tough workout. But, once you get off of it, you definitely feel your muscles are tired. I'm in my forties now and I've noticed my butt has lifted up once again. Yippee!! My arms are more tone and I just feel stronger. Exercising definitely empowers you. The back and forth motion makes me feel like I go backwards and get in touch with my power and then bring it forward. I really love it.
I've been telling everybody I can. I want my elderly Mom to try it. You have dials on the side to adjust for different resistance. To me, it is the perfect workout, especially for older people. It is mild enough and yet will get your heart going. You can clip your ear and know your heart rate too. It's very relaxing and enjoyable.
What I don't like about the rower is the foot straps. Your feet don't stay strapped in with the velcro. Personally, I found you don't really need them and I freer without tying my feet in. Freedom is everything!
The rower takes up pretty much room space with the extended arms so make sure you have the right place for it.
Kettler is a German-made company and unfortunately the directions came in German except for the directions for the electronic box for keeping time, etc. I didn't put the rower together myself, but it didn't seem to be too tough to do and was assembled in maybe an hour or so. Pictures for assembly were fine.
The box comes signature required which is an inconvenience if you're working, so I ended up having to pick it up myself. My box was also missing a piece so I had to contact Kettler for the part. It came within 4 or 5 days though, so I was happy. And, Amazon gave me a percentage back on my purchase so after that whole hassle, I think well of both Kettler and Amazon for good customer service and of course a great product.
So, in all you'll "Row, row, row your (rower), merrily down the (living room), merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily..life is but a dream!" It's important to be happy while you exercise. You gotta love it or you won't do it and make it a part of you. This rower will make you want to get out on the water next and really row!
